A few years ago, I became a victim to burnout, working long hours, tired all the time and not making time for self-care or for those things that matter most to me.
As a leader and coach, I learnt the hard way, and it didn’t happen overnight. Burnout creeps up on you, and when you least expect it, you are exposed to health issues, poor sleep, lacking motivation, shifts in mood, along with several other challenges.
Today, burnout is a highly overused term yet barely understood, and like myself, it wasn’t until I experienced it first-hand that I was able to really understand it.
Burnout can be best summed up in one word: exhaustion, both physical and mental. The feeling of constantly being fatigued, both physically and mentally and a lack of drive / motivation to do anything is how you feel all day / everyday.
So, what causes burnout?
Burnout can occur due to multiple reasons. Working long hours, the constant stress to perform under pressure and sacrificing your own wellbeing are major contributors. These often lead to changes in other lifestyle factors, poor diet, lack of physical activity and social engagement and a feeling of isolation.
The feeling of being constantly fatigued, changes in levels of motivation and ability to stay focused and make decisions are just a few signs that you should look out for.
How to Avoid It
1. Recognise the signs and set clear boundaries
Set boundaries that allow you to take breaks and switch off from work are critical. If you feel like you are at a stage of burnout, consult with your local General Practitioner.
2. Self-Care
Some of the best leaders I have had the opportunity to work with build in self-care as part of their routine, they make time for exercise, relaxation and recovery and don’t see these as luxuries, rather as essential leadership tools. Make health one of your key priorities
3. Remain Connected
Isolation fuels burnout. Build in time for regular check-ins with mentors, peers, or coaches who can provide guidance and support.
3. Purpose
Reconnect with the “why” behind your work. Purpose-driven leaders are more resilient and fulfilled.
Listen to your body and recognise what it is telling you. If you feel run down, take the time to rest. Don’t wait until it’s too late, see your doctor and take steps to facilitate change.
